BdV statements and press releases
- Stephan Mayer's later "sterile / hyperdidactic / unempathetic" framing of the exhibition.
- BdV press release on the 2016 appointment of Gundula Bavendamm as director of the Stiftung.
- BdV statement on the non-renewal of Gundula Bavendamm, November 2025. No public statement was issued. The BdV's first public positioning on the matter came in March 2026 (see below), framing the non-renewal as a routine personnel decision and criticising media coverage of internal Stiftungsrat deliberations. The silence itself is consistent with the BdV's stated approach of not commenting on governance decisions via the media.
- BdV president Stephan Mayer, "Auftrag der Stiftung in den Mittelpunkt stellen – Debatte versachlichen," 22 March 2026. First public BdV statement on the Bavendamm non-renewal, four months after the Stiftungsrat decision. Frames the non-renewal as aimed at foregrounding the foundation's statutory mandate. Criticises public discussion of internal governance processes.
- BdV Jahresbericht 2024. Filed with the Bundestag Lobbyregister.
- BdV Jahresbericht 2023. Filed with the Bundestag Lobbyregister.
- BdV Jahresempfang 2025 speech: the Heimatvertriebenen as the only Second World War victim group still required to justify its status.
Stiftung and advisory board documentation
- Resignations of advisory board members Troebst, Schwartz, Wildt, Madajczyk, and Ruchniewicz, July 2015. Five members resigned individually following the Stiftungsrat's election of Winfrid Halder on 29 June 2015. No joint statement was published. The shared rationale: the advisory board was excluded from meaningful participation in the selection process, and members no longer believed the Stiftung would be depoliticised.
- Mondtag, Ersan. Dispute with the Stiftung Flucht, Vertreibung, Versöhnung over the commissioned performance and film "Heimweh, ich weiß nur nicht wonach," February 2021. Mondtag and his team wanted to include quotations from Björn Höcke's speech calling for an erinnerungspolitische Wende um 180 Grad in order to spotlight far-right instrumentalisation of the Vertreibung theme. The Stiftung required their removal. In December 2020 Mondtag wrote to Kulturstaatsministerin Monika Grütters using the word Zensur. The dispute was resolved at a meeting on 10 February 2021 with a joint statement attributing the collapse of the commission to both sides.
- Scientific advisory board protests, November 2025 and March 2026. The advisory board unanimously protested the non-renewal of Bavendamm in November 2025. No standalone document was published; the protest was communicated internally and reported by the FAZ. In March 2026 the advisory board threatened collective resignation if Sven Oole was appointed. Piotr Madajczyk warned in a Deutsche Welle interview that Oole's appointment would be perceived in Poland as a paradigm shift, not a personnel change. Chancellor Merz intervened to block the appointment.

Lead: the politically organised descendants of the Vertriebene are breaking the pact between Gedenken and Verständigung.
